Flights to Honolulu

Honolulu sits on the island of Oahu and serves as the cultural and historical heart of Hawaii. Most travelers arrive expecting Waikiki Beach and find a richer, more layered destination — one that includes Pearl Harbor, ancient volcanic craters, world-class surf breaks, and a food culture shaped by Native Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Portuguese, and Chinese influences.

Waikiki remains the iconic beach destination, with its protected swimming, surfing schools, and mile of high-rise hotels. But Oahu offers far more once you leave town. Diamond Head Crater offers a moderate hike with sweeping views. The North Shore, an hour away, is home to legendary winter surf breaks like Pipeline and Sunset Beach, plus laid-back Haleiwa town and the famous Giovanni's shrimp truck.

Pearl Harbor is essential and moving — the USS Arizona Memorial sits above the sunken battleship where over 1,100 sailors remain entombed. Tickets are free but must be reserved online weeks in advance. The Polynesian Cultural Center on the windward side offers an in-depth introduction to Pacific Island cultures, while Iolani Palace downtown is the only royal palace on US soil.

Honolulu (HNL) is reached by direct flights from West Coast cities (5 to 6 hours) and most major US hubs. East Coast travelers typically face a long single-segment flight or a connection in California. Hawaii has a year-round mild climate, but the shoulder seasons of April-June and September-November offer the best balance of weather, crowds, and prices.
