About Volaris

Volaris (IATA code: Y4) is Mexico’s largest airline by passengers carried and an ultra-low-cost carrier in the strictest sense: the advertised fare covers a seat and a personal item, and everything else is priced separately.

Its bases are Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana and Cancún, and it operates one of the densest US–Mexico networks of any carrier, serving cities across California, Texas, Illinois and the Pacific Northwest. Much of that traffic is visiting friends and relatives rather than tourism.

The low fares are real, but so are the add-ons, and Volaris enforces its baggage rules tightly at the gate. Our agents quote the fully loaded price including bags and seats, which is the only way to compare Volaris honestly against Aeroméxico or a US carrier on the same route.

Volaris Baggage Policy

Carry-On Baggage

  • One personal item is included with every fare — maximum 45 x 35 x 20 cm.
  • A full-size carry-on bag costs extra on most fare types and must be purchased separately.
  • Buy bags at booking. Airport and gate prices are considerably higher and the rules are enforced.

Checked Baggage

  • Checked bags are chargeable on most fares.
  • Maximum size per checked bag: 158 cm total (length + width + height).
  • Maximum weight: 25 kg — overweight fees apply above it.
  • Volaris bundles can include bags. Ask us to price the bundle against buying à la carte.

24/7 Post-Booking Assistance

Travel can be unpredictable, but our travel experts are by your side around the clock. We help you adjust your Volaris booking, cancel flights, add services, or update passenger details — and if you need to cancel, we walk you through the refund process with complete transparency, so you know exactly what to expect and when.

Volaris — Frequently Asked Questions

  • With only a personal item, usually yes. Once you add a carry-on, a checked bag and a seat, the totals often converge. Our agents price both all-in so you can compare honestly.

  • A seat and one personal item. Carry-on bags, checked bags, seat selection and refreshments are all charged separately.

  • Yes, more strictly than most US carriers, and gate fees are high. Buy any bag you need at the time of booking.

  • Yes, US citizens need a valid passport for air travel to Mexico. Confirm your passport validity before booking.

  • As an ultra-low-cost carrier, Volaris has limited interline agreements, so rebooking on another airline is generally not an option. For time-critical travel we usually recommend a network carrier.

  • That is the comparison our agents make for free. We price the complete trip on both, including everything you plan to bring.
