About Avianca

Avianca (IATA code: AV) is the flag carrier of Colombia and, founded in 1919, the second-oldest airline in the world still in operation after KLM. Its hub is El Dorado International in Bogotá, with secondary bases in Medellín and San Salvador.

Avianca is one of the strongest networks within Latin America, particularly for connections between North America and the Andean countries. From the United States it serves Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Orlando and Houston, among others.

The airline restructured through Chapter 11 between 2020 and 2021 and now sits within the Abra Group alongside GOL. It remains a Star Alliance member, which makes United connections straightforward. Its fare structure is heavily unbundled, so our agents always quote the all-in price including bags.

Avianca Baggage Policy

Carry-On Baggage

  • One carry-on bag plus one personal item are included on most international fares.

Checked Baggage

  • Maximum weight: 23 kg in Economy, 32 kg in Business.
  • LifeMiles elite status raises the allowance. Call us and we will quote the all-in price with bags.

Avianca — Frequently Asked Questions

  • Search above to compare Avianca fares, or call our specialists 24/7. Because Avianca unbundles heavily, our agents quote the total including bags rather than the headline fare.

  • Basic fares are restrictive: they may allow only a personal item, exclude checked baggage, and carry tight change rules. The step up to a higher fare is often cheaper than adding a bag afterwards.

  • El Dorado is the strongest hub for the Andean region. For destinations in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and parts of Central America, an Avianca connection through Bogotá often beats routing through Miami or Panama.

  • Avianca completed a Chapter 11 restructuring in 2021 and now operates within the Abra Group alongside GOL. It continues to fly a full network and remains a Star Alliance member.

  • Yes. Both are Star Alliance members, so a US domestic connection can be ticketed together with the Avianca long-haul leg.

  • Yes. Latin American routes are a strong consolidator market. Call us for a free comparison.
